Protecting Parishioners

Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah to you and yours

From our family to yours, Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah!

Hanukkah is December 12-December 20 this year. The first candle of the menorah was lit at sundown last night.

Christmas is almost here too and I can hardly wait!

ICYMI (in case you missed it)

The Supreme Court will be taking up the case challenging Maryland’s congressional districts. Seven Maryland Republican voters brought the case. AG Brian Frosh argued against Maryland voters who contend the 6th congressional district was drawn to elect a Democrat.

You may recall that Governor O’Malley said in a deposition that Maryland Democrats used redistricting to flip the seat in Western Maryland from a reliably Republican seat to a Democrat seat. It worked. John Delaney defeated Roscoe Bartlett in the 2012 election.

This is a great article about the case:

AG Brian Frosh was on the 2010 Redistricting Committee and should recuse himself from the case as he was one of the Democrats that drew that map. Frosh owes it to the citizens of Maryland to step back from this case.

Protecting our Parishioners

Sheriff Jeff Gahler, Senator Wayne Norman, and I held a press conference Tuesday announcing a bill that we are introducing in January to help our churches defend their parishioners. The Parishioner Protection Act of 2018 will permit the wearing and carrying of a concealed handgun on church owned property by any “law abiding” member of the congregation providing they have written permission from the governing body of the church and are legally able to possess a firearm in the State of Maryland.

After the tragic church massacre in Texas were a madman killed 26 people and wounded 20 others, some religious institutions are worried about the safety of members. In Charleston, June 2015, another murderer opened fire during a church Bible study.

Should this bill pass, it will allow places of worship to provide this type of protection for their congregation but it will not force any religious institution to participate.
